Element of justification in contemporary epistemology

Abstract:

The definition of propositional knowledge has been said to be: "knowledge is belief in justified truth" and belief, truth, and justified are necessary and adequate conditions in the actualization of knowledge.  Many faults have been directed towards this three elemental definition, which some of them have been derived from the element of justification. This article reviews some of the most important ambiguities regarding the element of justification and refers to subjective and objective theories related to justification.                                                                                                                 Key Words: Justification – Theories of Justification – Subjective theories – Objective theories – epistemological Justification – Foundationalism – coherence theory – Propositional Knowledge.

The Loss Of the Knowing Subject In Contemporary Epistemology

I argue in this paper that the inability of contemporary American theories of knowledge to validate the central claim of realist epistemology-that some of our concepts refer to corresponding entities in the external world-is inextricably bound up with a failure to grasp the essential contribution of the knowing-self in the subject-object relation that constitutes knowledge. To be sure, much att...

Notes for Week 4 of Contemporary Debates in Epistemology 02 / 11 / 09

In the first four chapters of Contemporary Debates in Epistemology, our attention is directed towards disputes concerning “Knowledge and Skepticism”. Though the debaters of these chapters (Dretske/Hawthorne, Conee/Cohen, Vogel/Fumerton, and BonJour/Devitt) appear to have specifically directed focuses, it is clear that they are concerned with the same kinds of underlying issues. It will be usefu...

Philosophical justification of revelation in the view of Mulla Sadra

Molla Sadra has viewed revelation, vahy, to be the connection and unity of the Prophet’s spirit with intellectual and fantastic world. To establish such a state, one should cut off any attention from low desires and let wisdom govern over his worldly tendencies. In such a state intellectual and fantastic faculties find appropriate opportunity to attain their own perfections, namely to observ...

Genetic Epistemology and Naturalized Epistemology

When I started studying philosophy at the lycée , the very first book that I read happened to be Piaget’s Sagesse et illusions de la philosophie. I hated it. It explained that philosophy can, to some extent, keep its traditional role of searching for wisdom in the practical domain, but that it is no better than poetry when it tries to say things about the nature of the world, and even when it s...
